Burn Piles? What You Need to Know

Burn piles, what are they? And what do I need to know about them?

Burn piles are generally cleared material or slash that is left over from agricultural/land clearing or forestry operations.

The following tips will help you make sure your burn pile is well-constructed. It will also make a difference in ensuring a successful burn (90+% of the material in the pile is burnt).

  • Build the pile up out of the dirt, but not on organic soil.
  • Make sure the pile is free of dirt and rocks as much as possible.
  • Plan the burn well and seek assistance from Red-Hot Tips if required.
  • Monitor weather conditions and mixing heights to reduce smoke impacts on neighbouring properties and roadways.
  • Be aware of the radiant heat a large burn can generate and wear appropriate protective clothing.
  • Be prepared with machinery and firefighting equipment in case the burn escapes.
  • Consider the weather forecast for the days following your planned burn.

We recently assisted Mr Harnett with his burn. He was well prepared and the burn went as planned. Thanks for access to the farm John.
