Burn piles, what are they? And what do I need to know about them?
Burn piles are generally cleared material or slash that is left over from agricultural/land clearing or forestry operations.
The following tips will help you make sure your burn pile is well-constructed. It will also make a difference in ensuring a successful burn (90+% of the material in the pile is burnt).
- Build the pile up out of the dirt, but not on organic soil.
- Make sure the pile is free of dirt and rocks as much as possible.
- Plan the burn well and seek assistance from Red-Hot Tips if required.
- Monitor weather conditions and mixing heights to reduce smoke impacts on neighbouring properties and roadways.
- Be aware of the radiant heat a large burn can generate and wear appropriate protective clothing.
- Be prepared with machinery and firefighting equipment in case the burn escapes.
- Consider the weather forecast for the days following your planned burn.
